If you've scrolled through TikTok's beauty side in the last year, you've seen them: dramatic, spiky, impossibly defined lash extensions that make eyes look like they jumped straight out of an anime character. They're bold. They're unapologetic. And they're the single hottest lash trend of 2025-2026.
At With Love, Beauty, we call it The Groovy Set — our signature anime-inspired lash look. It's one of our most popular services and one of my personal favorites to create. Every set is a work of art.
What Are Anime Lash Extensions?
Anime lash extensions — also called manga lashes or spiky lashes — are a style of lash extensions designed to mimic the dramatic, wide-eyed look of Japanese anime and manga characters. Instead of the soft, blended, fluffy look of traditional volume lashes, anime lashes are all about contrast, definition, and intentional spikes.
The signature elements that make anime lashes instantly recognizable:
- Defined spikes — Individual longer lashes or small fans that extend beyond the base layer, creating a starburst effect. These spikes are the hallmark of the look.
- Intentional gaps — Unlike traditional sets that aim for seamless fullness, anime lashes embrace negative space between the spikes. The gaps are part of the design.
- Two-layer construction — A shorter, denser base layer provides fullness close to the lash line, while longer spike lashes extend outward for drama. The contrast between layers is what creates the manga effect.
- Varied lengths — Spikes are typically 1-3mm longer than the base layer. The length difference creates that animated, doll-like eye shape.
- Directional placement — Spikes fan outward toward the outer corners for a cat-eye anime look, or radiate evenly for a wide-eyed doll effect.
Why Anime Lashes Blew Up
This trend didn't come from nowhere. Several cultural forces converged to push anime lashes into mainstream beauty:
TikTok changed everything. Short-form video is the perfect format for before-and-after lash transformations. Anime lashes are inherently dramatic, which means the reveal videos get insane engagement. According to Spate's 2025 makeup report, manga and spiky lashes topped the charts as the year's most searched makeup trends.
Anime culture went mainstream. Japanese anime isn't a niche interest anymore — it's global pop culture. Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan are as mainstream as Marvel. With that cultural shift, anime-inspired beauty became aspirational rather than costume-y.
Gen Z wants to stand out. After years of the same natural, wispy lash look dominating beauty, younger clients wanted something that felt fresh, artistic, and uniquely theirs. Anime lashes are a statement. You can't mistake them for "maybe she's born with it" — and that's the entire point.
The cosplay-to-everyday pipeline. What started as a cosplay and convention look gradually crossed into everyday beauty. People realized you don't need to be dressed as Sailor Moon to rock anime lashes — they look incredible with a plain white tee and jeans.
The Groovy Set: Our Signature Anime Lash Look
At With Love, Beauty, our anime-inspired set is called The Groovy Set — and there's a reason it has its own name on the menu. It's not just anime lashes. It's anime lashes with personality.
The Groovy Set is $150 and takes about 3 to 3.5 hours because of the level of precision involved. Every spike is individually mapped and placed. The base layer is built first for density, and then the spikes are added one by one to create the exact starburst pattern that works for your eye shape.
What makes our Groovy Set different from a generic anime lash set:
- Customized to your eye shape — Round eyes, almond eyes, hooded eyes — the spike placement changes for each. I don't use a one-size-fits-all mapping.
- Weight management — Anime spikes are longer, which means they're heavier. I use ultra-fine fibers and strategic placement so the spikes look dramatic without weighing down your natural lashes.
- Hybrid base options — The base layer can be classic (1:1) for a more editorial look, or volume (fans) for maximum drama. We decide together based on the vibe you're going for.
- The "wow factor" test — Before you leave, I check the set from every angle. The spikes should be visible in profile, from the front, and when you look down. If they don't pass the wow test, I adjust.
Anime Lashes vs. Other Lash Styles
Not sure how anime lashes compare to other popular styles? Here's the breakdown:
Anime vs. Classic Lashes: Classic lashes are one extension per natural lash — subtle, natural, elegant. Anime lashes are the opposite end of the spectrum. If classic is a whisper, anime is a shout. Both are beautiful, but they serve completely different purposes.
Anime vs. Volume Lashes: Volume lashes use handmade fans for fullness and density. They're dramatic but still blended and soft. Anime lashes use volume techniques for the base layer but add defined spikes that break the softness. The spikes are what make it anime.
Anime vs. Wet/Wispy Lashes: Wet lashes have a clumpy, freshly-cried look. Wispy lashes have scattered longer pieces for a "messy on purpose" effect. Anime lashes are more structured and deliberate than both — the spikes are precise, not random.
Anime vs. Cat Eye Lashes: Cat eye mapping places longer lashes on the outer corners for a winged effect. Anime lashes CAN be mapped as a cat eye, but they can also be mapped for a doll-eye (center-weighted) or even all-around spike placement. Cat eye is a mapping style. Anime is a texture style. You can combine them.
Who Gets Anime Lashes?
My anime lash clients in Miami range from college students to professionals in their 30s and 40s. The stereotype that it's "just for cosplayers" is completely outdated. Here's who's actually booking:
- Content creators who want lashes that photograph and film beautifully from any angle
- Brides wanting a bold bridal look who don't want boring, safe wedding lashes
- Festival and event-goers — Miami's music and art scene is massive, and anime lashes are perfect for events
- Everyday bold girls who simply love dramatic eyes and want to make a statement walking into work, class, or brunch
- First-time lash extension clients who come specifically because they saw the anime look on TikTok and want exactly that
How Long Do Anime Lash Extensions Last?
Anime lash extensions last 2-4 weeks before needing a fill, just like any other lash extension style. The spikes may shed slightly faster than the base layer because they're longer and more exposed to daily wear, but with proper care, most clients get a solid 3 weeks before their fill.
Aftercare for anime lashes is the same as regular extensions:
- No water on lashes for 24-48 hours after application
- Avoid oil-based products near the eyes
- Clean daily with a lash-safe cleanser and a soft spoolie
- Don't pull, rub, or pick at the spikes (tempting, I know)
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction
For refills, you'll need at least 40% of extensions remaining. If you've lost more than that, it becomes a full set rather than a fill. Our lash refills start at $50.
Can You Customize the Drama Level?
Absolutely. Not everyone wants maximum anime intensity. I work with clients across the entire spectrum:
- Subtle anime — Shorter spikes, fewer of them, mostly concentrated on the outer corner. Gives a hint of the manga effect without being overwhelming. Great for work environments with strict dress codes.
- Medium anime — More spikes, more evenly distributed, noticeable but not over-the-top. This is the most popular level. It says "I meant to do this" without screaming.
- Full anime / The Groovy Set — Maximum spike length, maximum contrast, maximum drama. This is the editorial, Instagram, "turn every head in the room" level.
You can also add colored lash extensions to your anime set for an extra pop. We offer colored accents mixed into the spikes — think blue tips, purple bases, or green spikes scattered throughout. It's the ultimate customization and it's available for $160 with our Customized Wispy Set option.
The Miami Anime Lash Scene
Miami is the perfect city for anime lashes. The culture here celebrates boldness — from Art Basel to Wynwood to South Beach, nobody bats an eye (pun intended) at dramatic beauty choices. If anything, Miami rewards them.
And practically speaking, anime lashes hold up well in South Florida's humidity. The spike structure means more airflow between lash fibers compared to dense volume sets, which can actually improve retention in humid climates. Your spikes stay spiking even on the sweatiest Miami afternoons.
