Your First Brazilian Wax: What to Expect & How to Prepare

If you are reading this, you are probably thinking about getting your first Brazilian wax and feeling a mix of curiosity and nervousness. That is completely normal. Every single one of my regular clients felt the same way before their first appointment, and almost all of them came back and said, "That was so much easier than I expected."

As a waxing specialist at With Love, Beauty in Miami, I perform Brazilian waxes every day. My studio in the Westchester area is a private suite, which means it is just you and me in a calm, comfortable space. No open rooms, no strangers walking by, no awkwardness. I wrote this guide to answer every question I get from first-timers so you can walk in feeling prepared and confident.

What Exactly Is a Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian wax removes all hair from the front, back, and everything in between of the bikini area. Some clients choose to leave a small strip or triangle of hair at the front for a customized look, and that is absolutely an option. The key difference between a Brazilian and a regular bikini wax is that a Brazilian goes much further, removing hair from areas that a basic bikini line cleanup does not touch.

The result is completely smooth skin that lasts significantly longer than shaving. While a razor only cuts hair at the surface and gives you maybe a day or two before stubble appears, waxing removes hair from the root. That means you get 3 to 5 weeks of smoothness before regrowth even becomes noticeable.

How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax

Preparation makes all the difference in your experience. Follow these guidelines and your first appointment will go as smoothly as possible:

Hair Length Matters

Your hair needs to be at least a quarter inch long for the wax to grip it effectively. That is roughly the length of a grain of rice. If you have been shaving, stop about 2 to 3 weeks before your appointment to let the hair grow out. If it is too short, the wax cannot grab it and we will end up with patchy results. If it is much longer than half an inch, I can trim it at the start of your appointment, so do not worry about it being too long.

Exfoliate Gently

In the 2 to 3 days before your appointment, gently exfoliate the bikini area with a soft scrub or exfoliating washcloth. This removes dead skin cells that can trap hair and lead to ingrown hairs. However, do not exfoliate the day of your appointment because freshly scrubbed skin can be more sensitive to waxing.

Timing and Your Cycle

If possible, schedule your Brazilian wax for the week after your period ends. Your pain threshold is highest during this time because hormone levels have stabilized. The week before and during your period, your skin tends to be more sensitive, which can make the experience more uncomfortable. That said, you can absolutely get waxed during your period if you wear a tampon or cup. It is not a problem at all from my end.

What to Avoid Before Your Appointment

  • Skip the caffeine. Coffee and energy drinks can make your nerve endings more sensitive. If you can, avoid caffeine for a few hours before your appointment.
  • No alcohol. It might seem like liquid courage would help, but alcohol actually increases blood flow to the skin and makes you more sensitive to pain. Come sober.
  • No tanning. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is far more sensitive and reactive. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 24 hours before your wax.
  • No lotions or oils. Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin in the bikini area. Lotions, oils, and moisturizers create a barrier that prevents the wax from adhering properly.

Pro tip: If you are really nervous about pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment. It helps take the edge off, especially for first-timers.

What Happens During a Brazilian Wax Appointment

Here is a step-by-step walkthrough so nothing catches you off guard:

  1. Arrival and consultation: When you arrive at the studio, we will chat briefly about your experience level, any skin sensitivities, and what kind of result you want (fully bare, landing strip, triangle). This takes about 5 minutes.
  2. Getting comfortable: You will undress from the waist down in the private suite. I provide disposable undergarments if you prefer, but most clients go without them since they need to come off for the wax anyway. You lie down on a clean, comfortable table.
  3. Cleansing and prep: I cleanse the area with a pre-wax spray that removes oils and bacteria. This helps the wax adhere better and keeps everything hygienic.
  4. Waxing: I apply the wax in small sections, working from front to back. I use professional-grade hard wax from brands like Italwax and Waxness that grips the hair without pulling on the skin. Hard wax is applied warm, hardens as it cools, and then is peeled off in one quick motion. It is far gentler on the skin than traditional strip wax, which is exactly why I chose it for intimate waxing.
  5. Positioning: I will guide you through any position changes. Yes, you will need to adjust positions a few times during the appointment. This is completely routine and I promise I have seen it all. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.
  6. Tweezing: After the bulk of the wax is done, I go over the area with tweezers to catch any stubborn hairs that the wax missed. This ensures a completely clean result.
  7. Soothing: I apply a calming post-wax oil or serum to reduce redness and soothe the skin. Some clients experience mild pinkness, which is totally normal and fades within a few hours.

The entire appointment takes about 20 to 30 minutes for a first-timer. Repeat appointments often go faster because the hair grows back finer and sparser over time.

Let's Talk About Pain

I am not going to lie and say Brazilian waxing is painless. You are removing hair from the root in a sensitive area, and your body notices. But here is what I tell every first-timer: the anticipation is always worse than the actual experience.

The sensation is a quick, sharp pull that lasts about half a second per section. It is not a prolonged ache. The discomfort happens in the moment of the pull and subsides almost immediately. Most clients describe it as a strong pinch. The first Brazilian is always the most uncomfortable because the hair is at its thickest and most firmly rooted. Every subsequent appointment gets easier because consistent waxing weakens the hair follicle over time.

The quality of the wax matters enormously for pain management. Professional hard wax from Italwax and Waxness is specifically designed for sensitive areas. It wraps around each hair without sticking to the skin, which means it pulls the hair cleanly without tearing at your skin. Cheaper waxes bond to the skin surface and pull it along with the hair, which is why bad wax jobs hurt so much more and cause unnecessary irritation.

In Miami's warm climate, your pores are naturally more open, which actually makes waxing slightly easier and less painful compared to colder climates where pores constrict and hold onto hair more tightly. That is one small perk of living in South Florida.

Brazilian Wax Aftercare: How to Keep Skin Smooth

What you do in the 24 to 48 hours after your Brazilian wax is crucial for avoiding irritation, bumps, and ingrown hairs. Follow these guidelines:

The First 24 Hours

  • Avoid heat: No hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs. Warm showers are fine, but keep the temperature moderate. Heat opens pores and can introduce bacteria to freshly waxed follicles.
  • Skip the gym: Sweat and friction against freshly waxed skin is a recipe for irritation and breakouts. Take the day off from intense workouts.
  • No swimming: Pools, oceans, and lakes contain bacteria and chemicals that can irritate open follicles. Wait at least 24 hours. I know this is tough in Miami where the beach calls daily, but your skin will thank you.
  • Wear loose clothing: Tight jeans, leggings, and synthetic underwear create friction. Wear loose cotton underwear and relaxed-fit clothing for the rest of the day.
  • No touching: Resist the urge to constantly feel how smooth you are. Your hands carry bacteria, and freshly waxed pores are more susceptible to infection.

Ongoing Aftercare

  • Exfoliate regularly: Starting 3 to 4 days after your wax, gently exfoliate the bikini area 2 to 3 times per week. This is the single most important thing you can do to prevent ingrown hairs. Use a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt in the shower.
  • Moisturize: Keep the area hydrated with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer. Dry skin traps hair underneath the surface and causes ingrowns.
  • Do not shave between appointments. I cannot stress this enough. Shaving between waxes disrupts the hair growth cycle, makes the hair grow back thicker and coarser, and undoes the progress we have made. If you commit to waxing consistently, your hair will grow back finer, sparser, and easier to remove each time.

The Vajacial: A Perfect Add-On

If you struggle with ingrown hairs, dark spots, or irritation in the bikini area, consider adding a vajacial to your appointment. A vajacial is essentially a facial for the bikini area. It includes deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extractions of ingrown hairs, a soothing mask, and targeted serums to brighten dark spots and calm inflammation.

I especially recommend vajacials for clients who are transitioning from years of shaving. Shaving often leaves behind a legacy of ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation, and rough texture that waxing alone does not immediately fix. A vajacial addresses those existing issues while your consistent waxing routine prevents new ones from forming.

How Often Should You Come Back?

For best results, schedule your Brazilian wax every 4 to 5 weeks. This timing aligns with your hair growth cycle and catches the hair at the optimal length for clean removal. Going too early means the hair is too short to wax. Waiting too long means the hair is thick and the appointment is more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

Consistency is the secret to easier, less painful Brazilian waxes. Clients who come every 4 weeks tell me their appointments are dramatically less uncomfortable than their first time. The hair grows back thinner, weaker, and easier to remove. Some clients who have been waxing consistently for a year or more have patches where hair barely grows back at all.

Why Studio Quality Matters

Not all Brazilian waxes are created equal. The products used, the hygiene practices, and the skill of the esthetician make an enormous difference in your experience and results. At With Love, Beauty, I use professional-grade hard wax from brands like Italwax and Waxness, fresh applicators for every client, and sterile, sanitized equipment for every single appointment. My private suite is clean, comfortable, and designed to make an intimate service feel as relaxed as possible.

If you have had a bad waxing experience before, whether it was painful, unsanitary, or just gave poor results, please do not let that scare you away from waxing permanently. A bad Brazilian usually comes down to inexperience, poor technique, or cheap products. The right esthetician with the right wax changes everything.

You deserve smooth, beautiful skin and a waxing experience that is professional, gentle, and maybe even enjoyable. Yes, some of my regular clients actually look forward to their appointments. The studio has good vibes, great music, and you leave feeling amazing.
