What a lash refill actually is
A refill is maintenance on a set you already have. Your natural lashes shed on their own schedule, and when one falls out, the extension attached to it goes with it. That's normal and it isn't a sign that anything went wrong. Over a couple of weeks those little losses add up, and a refill fills the gaps so your set looks full and even again instead of patchy.
On my lash menu, Lash Refills are $50+ and take 45+ minutes. The plus sign matters. The 40% rule, and why it decides your price
This is the one line on the menu I wish everyone read before booking. To count as a refill, you must have at least 40% of your lash extensions remaining. Anything less will be a full set.
I'm not being strict for the sake of it. When most of a set has shed, there isn't enough left to blend new extensions into, so I'm really building from scratch. At that point the appointment takes full-set time and costs full-set money, even if you booked it as a refill. That's the real reason people end up paying more than they planned. It usually isn't the refill price, it's waiting a week too long and sliding under 40%.
A quick way to check at home: look straight into a mirror in good light and compare each eye to how it looked the day you got your set. If you can still see a clear line of extensions across most of the lid, you're likely fine. If you're counting single lashes and seeing lots of bare spots, you're getting close to full-set territory. When in doubt, book the refill sooner rather than later.
How often to book refills for lash extensions
Lash extensions typically last 2 to 4 weeks before a refill is needed, and I recommend scheduling lash refills every 2 to 3 weeks to keep a full, seamless look. That window depends on your own lash growth cycle, your aftercare, and your routine. Somebody who sleeps on their back, keeps oil-based products away from their eyes, and brushes their lashes daily with a clean spoolie will hold onto a set longer than somebody who sleeps face-down in a pile of pillows.
Living in Miami adds a twist. Humidity is high all year, we sweat, we swim, and we reapply sunscreen constantly, so retention can run a little shorter in the hottest months. If you notice faster shedding in summer, leaning toward the 2-week end of the range keeps you comfortably above 40%.
My best practical tip is simple. Book your next refill before you leave your current appointment. It takes thirty seconds, it keeps you on rhythm, and it's how you avoid the "it's been five weeks and now I need a full set" moment.
Switching styles, coming from another studio, and bottom lashes
A refill keeps the look you already have. If you want to change it, say moving from a classic set to something fuller, that's usually a new set rather than a refill, because the whole shape changes. If you wear contacts, bring your glasses in case you'd rather take them out. The cleaner your lashes are when you sit down, the more of your time goes to actually filling your set.
