If you wax or shave your bikini area, you know the frustration: you finally get smooth, and then come the red bumps, the dark spots, and the painful ingrown hairs that never seem to fully go away. It's one of the most common concerns clients bring to me — and the good news is, it's very treatable. The single best in-studio tool for it is a vajacial.
This post focuses specifically on ingrown hairs and bikini bumps. If you want the full overview of the treatment itself, read my complete guide to vajacials in Miami first.
Why Ingrown Hairs Happen
An ingrown hair forms when a hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin instead of rising up and out of the follicle. The usual culprit is a buildup of dead skin that traps the hair below the surface. A few things make the bikini area especially prone to them:
- Coarse or curly hair — naturally more likely to curl back into the skin.
- Shaving against the grain — creates sharp, angled hair tips that re-enter the skin easily.
- Friction and tight clothing — especially activewear in Miami's heat, which traps sweat and bacteria.
- Lack of exfoliation — dead skin blocks the follicle and seals hair in.
Left alone, ingrowns can become inflamed, infected, and leave behind dark spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) that linger long after the bump is gone. Picking at them at home almost always makes the scarring worse.
How a Vajacial Treats Ingrown Hairs
A vajacial is essentially a facial for the bikini area, and every step targets the ingrown-hair cycle:
- Deep cleanse — clears away surface bacteria and oil that feed inflammation.
- Exfoliation — removes the dead-skin barrier that traps hairs in the first place.
- Extractions — this is the key step. I gently and safely release trapped ingrown hairs and clear congested follicles — properly, without the scarring that home picking causes.
- High-frequency treatment — helps kill bacteria and calm active breakouts in the area.
- Soothing mask & serums — reduce redness, brighten dark spots over time, and nourish the skin.
One vajacial makes a visible difference, but ingrown hairs are a cycle — the real magic happens when you treat the area consistently and exfoliate at home between visits.
The Wax + Vajacial Combo
The most effective routine I recommend for ingrown-prone clients is pairing a vajacial with a regular Brazilian wax. Waxing removes the hair from the root (which already produces fewer ingrowns than shaving), and adding a vajacial every other wax keeps the skin exfoliated, clear, and calm. If you're new to waxing, my first Brazilian wax guide walks you through what to expect.
You can even add a vajacial to the same appointment as your wax — the vajacial soothes the freshly waxed skin and reduces post-wax irritation. Just mention it when you book so enough time is reserved for both.
Preventing Ingrowns at Home
- Exfoliate 2–3 times a week — a gentle chemical exfoliant is kinder than a harsh scrub on this delicate area.
- Switch from shaving to waxing — fewer sharp hair tips means fewer ingrowns over time.
- Hydrate the skin — supple skin lets hair break through more easily.
- Wear breathable fabrics — especially important in the Miami climate.
- Never pick or dig — leave extractions to a professional to avoid scarring and infection.
Book a Vajacial in Miami
If ingrown hairs and bikini bumps have been a constant battle, a vajacial is the targeted treatment that actually addresses the root of the problem. At With Love, Beauty in Westchester, the vajacial is booked together with a Brazilian wax as the Brazilian + Vajacial, $100 for about 80 minutes. See the full waxing menu or book online below.
